Food AND Medicine has made the following statement of support for Occupy Bangor:
Food AND Medicine has worked since 2002 for a just economy in which nobody is forced to choose between food, medicine and other basic necessities. We organize to make Eastern Maine a livable region for all by building a grassroots movement of laid-off and low-income workers, local farmers and supporters.
We envision a future where everyone has access to good, secure jobs with dignity, where our region has a vibrant local economy including local agriculture and where the fruits of the economy are divided in a fair and non-discriminatory manner, and we work toward this future every day.
Like the Occupy movement, we are concerned about the growing concentration of wealth in America, and corporate control of the political process. Like the Occupy movement, we seek a world where working people—the 99%–decide what happens in our workplaces and our communities.
At Food AND Medicine, we have been inspired by the spontaneous growth of Occupy encampments around the country, and we wholeheartedly support Occupy Bangor in carrying on its peaceful encampment in Peirce Park. At Occupy Bangor, we see participatory, grassroots democracy being practiced. At Occupy Bangor, we see people from diverse backgrounds meeting in person and talking about what kind of economy we want and how we can build it, together. We know this is necessary to build the kind of future we want, and we congratulate the hard work of Occupy Bangor members making it happen each day.
