Annual Solidarity Harvest Auction Scheduled for August 12

July 5, 2017

ATTENTION LOCAL BUSINESSES!

Food AND Medicine (FAM) has organized Solidarity Harvest annually since 2003, providing locally-sourced Thanksgiving meal baskets to people in hard times throughout Maine. Each basket has enough food to feed 8-10 people! The program has grown each year as food insecurity increases; from 130 in 2003 to 1300 in 2016.

This year, we plan to distribute 1500 baskets with enough food to feed between 12,000 and 15,000 people. This program also supports local farmers; we plan to purchase produce and food from between 40-60 Maine farms and food producers, prioritizing smaller farms and helping by providing a home for surplus crops that they might otherwise be unable to sell. In 2016, over 400 volunteers helped to sort and assemble the baskets and help to deliver produce from the farms. FAM partners with over 40 organizations to organize volunteers and identify recipients – including the Eastern Maine Labor Council (EMLC) and its 43 member unions (with combined total membership of over 5000), childcare providers, social service agencies, area faith groups and churches, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, and high school and college student organizations.

We need your help again this year! Food AND Medicine is holding a fundraising AUCTION to raise money for Solidarity Harvest on Saturday, August 12th, 2017 at 4:30 PM at the Solidarity Center in Brewer. We are looking for donations of items or gift certificates to raise funds toward the purchase of the food for Solidarity Harvest.

If you’ve got a small business, this is a great opportunity to reach new customers while supporting a worthy cause! Items will be well-publicized on social media and our website, and there will be local media coverage of the event.

We’d also love for you to join us at the auction, where you can get some great deals and also some one-of-a-kind items.

A few of the organizations and businesses that have already donated an item this year include:

  • Chicago Bears
  • Penobscot Theater
  • Boston Red Sox
  • Stonewall Kitchen
  • Waterfront Concerts
  • Allagash Brewery

Please contact us if you’d like to donate an item. Food AND Medicine is a 501c(3), so donated items will be fully tax-deductible. Call 207-989-5860, or email Melissa@foodandmedicine.org.
